Watching Grass Grow from Space
Grasslands follow distinct seasonal rhythms, and some of those patterns can be seen from space. Research including the Glenthorne Grassland Project explored how freely available Sentinel-2 satellite imagery can help track the recovery of restored native grasslands.
Soil, Seed and Site
At Glenthorne, we tested how different approaches to site preparation influence native grassland recovery. Topsoil removal produced the strongest recovery of native plant diversity, particularly the wildflowers and other forbs that can be difficult to restore.
The evolving circle of landscape design
Current concerns such as biodiversity and climate resilience represent just one phase in an ongoing cycle of evolving values in landscape design. By understanding and reflecting on these values, practitioners can consciously choose which ones to prioritise in their projects.
A deep dive into sunlight and soil
At Glenthorne, we tested a method to restore native grasslands using soil solarisation, originally developed for horticulture and now applied in ecological restoration. This involves covering moist soil with clear plastic during summer to eradicate weed seeds.
